PCOS Strikes Again!

Wow, two posts in one day from me, right? Well, this one is not such great news. My OB nurse called and said that my blood sugars or glucose (or something, can’t really remember) came out high. Not dangerously high, but high. So, my OB, who knows a lot about PCOS, has decided to diagnose me with gestational diabetes at 11 weeks. He said because of my insulin problems and PCOS that if it is high now it will likely only get worse so it is better to get it under control now instead of later. So, I have to go to my doctor’s at 12:00 and pick up a glucometer and test strips and then meet with the nurse to go over how to use it and some sort of diet I am supposed to be on now. I am pissed but this is not unexpected. I just didn’t expect it this early. The good news is that little Doozer is healthy and I want to keep it that way. I have a hard time with diets but I don’t have a choice here, hopefully knowing that it is the very best for my baby will give me the will power I need. I’m a little annoyed with having to prick my finger all the time but it can’t be any worse than shots in the ass can it? Dh said he would do the diet with me because he needs to lose some weight as well. I appreciate that, it will make it easier if we are both eating healthier. So today when we get home we will empty out the fridge and go grocery shopping for whatever type of food they tell me I am supposed to eat. I’m guessing my favorite Oreo cookies wont be on the list huh? Please pray for me. I want to take care of this now because I want to be healthy and I want Doozer to be healthy too. Also, if any of you have had GD or know someone who has it could you please give me some advice, pointers, words of encouragement, something? I will update when I get back from the doctors.

Dearest Mo, Hang in there, honey! There are great resources including www.diabetes.org from the American Diabetes Association. The new glucometers can use a sample from yours arms and other spots besides fingertips. Thanks to your DH for partnering with you. Contact me anytime and sending my best. You're going to be great and it's all about getting into a routine. (kind of like parenting) ((Hugs))

Sorry about the GD. I don't know too much about it, but it sure is amazing what the thought of a healthy baby can inspire us to do! (and you're right, if we can stick needles in ourself, what's a few fruits and veggies, right) And what a wonderful hubby you've got to do the diet with you!

Good luck with it

Sorry about the GD so early. My dad has diabetes and he got the glucometer that you can only test from your finger tips. He rotates fingers each time but eventually you'll find that one certain finger won't hurt as bad as the others. Good luck and I hope you and your hubby do well with the diet!

i had it - it sucks at first. Be honest with the nutritionalist on what you like to eat.

I ate ALOT of cheeseburgers (no buns) cheese sticks, glouc drnks shakes, veinna sausages, almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, blueberries, salads with meat in it. etc ..yougurt

Yucky! You can do this. It sucks but it will be ok and Doozer will be just fine.

Sorry to hear about the GD - how painful that you have been diagnosed this early on. Can't believe you are 11 weeks already, I still get so excited everytime I read your blog :-)

Bummer to get this diagnosis early on. I would be upset, too. But, you can do it! I only know a couple of people who had it and it ended up being not too bad. (Easy for me to say on their behalf.) Let us know what the nutritionist says. Hopefully, the food part won't be too bad.

UGH!! I really hope that your doctor is just being extra cautious and that your blood sugars will get into the normal range with a modified diet. (fingers crossed for you!!)

Aw Morrisa, I'm sorry that you have to deal with this - and at 11 wks already. Seems like after doing the whole infertility and IVF, you should get a free pass to the pregnancy finish line without any bumps, doesn't it? At least I think people like you should! I don't have experience with GD - but know I'm always here to listen, give you some support and more importantly a big hug to you!

It's so supportive the DH will be doing the same food diet as you, it really helps with support and makes it a little more easier.
Best of luck with everything.
(BTW I love your last post with the doppler, what an awesome sound!)

Thanks for the sweet comments! As far as the swelling - sorry for the too much info, but I first noticed because when I sat down I kept feeling like I was sitting on something - it was my "most outer lady parts." I actually showed my mom because she is a retired labor and delivery nurse and she was like, yup that is common for some pregnant women, especially those after a cerclage! I'm hoping yours don't "Puff up and rise to the occasion" for a few more weeks sweetie!

I just wandered in from Lost & Found. Sorry to hear about the GD. I had it and after a few weeks it was no problem at all. My doc wanted me to eat a certain amount of carbs for each meal, 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. I ate a ton of chicken, pb&j sandwiches, eggs, veggies, low carb yogurt, sugar free ice pops and ice cream. Just look for things that have low sugar and carb counts. I had to have chocolate every day too. I bought the little mini twix bars and had one or two a day. My dietitian recommended the book, The 2008 Calorie King, Calorie Fat & Carbohydrate Counter. I picked it up at Barnes & Noble. It has just about everything you can think of food-wise broken down into calories, carbs and fat. It also has info from a ton of restaurants so you can eat out when ever you want.

As for your Oreo's, there are about 24 carbs in 3 original cookies. I don't know what your carb break down for your meals would be, but my evening snack was 30 carbs, if your amount is the same eat your oreo's! There really isn't anything you can't have, you just have to eat high carb foods in moderation. I had to stay away from most fruits and fruit juice's because they send my numbers too high.

Anyway, sorry for rambling. I wish you the best you can do it it just takes some getting used to. If you have any questions I would be more than happy to try and answer them feel free to contact me through my blog. Hang in there and take care of that precious baby!

Also, get a small ice pack and hold it on your finger for a few minutes before you do your sample. It will barely hurt!

Best of luck!

Sorry to hear about the GD. The crap linked to PCOS never stops, even in pregnancy.
